London’s Design Museum has announced the 74 nominees for the 2020 edition of the Beazley Designs of the Year.

Now in its 13th installment, the exhibition brings together some of the most innovative designs from the previous year spanning architecture, fashion, transport, product, and graphic designs. This year’s cohort of nominees includes the house for the Oscar-winning thriller Parasite, Stormzy’s stab-proof vest designed by Banksy and worn at Glastonbury, and the graphic now known around the world of the novel coronavirus.

The nominees offer a unique snapshot at the time just before the pandemic settled into life. In a statement about the exhibition, Emily King, curator of the Beazley Designs of the Year 2020, said “It will require careful construction and precise story telling in order to establish the big themes and preoccupations from that period. The show will be arranged chronologically, suggesting a countdown from January 2019 to the moment our attention shifted in late January 2020. More than merely an assessment of the past, it will be a frame for exploring the future.”

Votes can be submitted for favourite designs and this year’s panel of judges includes: Razia Iqbal, broadcast journalist at BBC News – Chair; Samuel Ross, founder and creative director of A-COLD-WALL*; Camille Walala, artist; Seetal Solanki, founder and director of Ma-tt-er; Matt Jones, principal designer at Google AI; Edwin Heathcote, Financial Times architecture and design critic; and Dr. Philipp Rode, executive director of LSE Cities.
